At times the words monogram, engrave or personalize are exploited with the same meaning intended. In fact they refer to totally different things. A monogram is a design made from letters of the alphabet. The letters used usually represent persons’ initials. They’re formed and interlocked in an artistic way to have a pleasant appearance. Monograms have been used to spot private items for centuries. A normal monogram would consist of the three initials of a person’s name. They wouldn’t be utilized in first to last order. If they were they’d simply be initials. Instead they’re First Primary, Last First and Middle Primary. The center letter representing the last name is sometimes the biggest letter. The other 2 letters are half to 23rds the peak of the middle one. Sizing varies depending on the artist and the effect desired. Periods aren’t used between the letters. The term engrave refers back to the process of cutting or incising a design or pattern into the outer surface of an item.

Engraving is sometimes performed on soft metals or plastics and acrylics. There are plenty of techniques of engraving some going back to the beginning of man. The more modern strategies make use of PCs and lasers to perform the task. Earlier strategies used by hand powered pantographs and even hammer and chisel. Engraving is a high art form that’s closely tied to the development of the printing industry. The term personalize is a common term describing a design or name being placed on an item.

Many techniques are utilized in customization. Some are engraving, silk screening, embroidery, sublimation printing and foil printing. Customization can take on many forms and be applied to nearly any medium. Each of these terms are firmly related even though they each have completely different meanings. They can’t be used to replace one another and still be correct. Particularly when speaking to an engraver who will visualize different things for each term.

It’d be correct to claim that I’m going to personalize my door knocker by having it engraved with my monogram.
